Favourite Makeup Artists

Hey sweeties,

The other day on my tumblr I was asked by the lovely 'cupcakeromance' - her tumblr is; http://cupcakeromance.tumblr.com/ '

Who are some of your favourite make up artists? :)

I loved this question, and thought you readers of my blog might enjoy reading my answer too :)
I could have gone on forever and ever about makeup artists I love, but tried to confine it into a bitesized answer.. So here it is;

ooh what a fun question!

my favourite makeup artists are…

alex box - she is AMAZING and is also the creative director of illamasqua, her take on makeup is the same as mine, she’s more interested in the art side rather than the beautifying part. also, she’s a world famous makeup artist, yet she’s from grimbsy, a small fishing town - so she’s like my idol too cos she’s from such an untrendy town and has such an amazing job!.. here’s a picture of an example of her work..

kevin aucion is another inspiration - he’s amazing! look how he made lisa marie presley look insanely like marilyn monroe! i couldn’t believe it when i realised it wasn’t her! this guys got talent!

Pat Macgrath is another insanely good makeup artist, she does loads of the fun catwalk makeup looks that are always getting reblogged on tumblr.. plus if you read interviews with her she’s such an amazing and genuinely nice person! here’s a pic of her work..

another makeup artist i fell in love with after reading his book is scott barnes.. he’s worked mostly as j.lo’s makeup artist, but also created some beautiful looks for kim kardashian! he works with makeup in a completely new and fun way! read his book ‘about face’, it’s brill! it has the most wonderful before and after shots too! they honestly took my breath away!

and finally lisa eldrige! i’ve only recently discovered her but she’s such a wonderful lady and she creates the most beautiful makeup! she did the makeup for cheryl on this months elle magazine! and cheryl looked super hot!

this is my favourite tumblr ask i’ve ever had! ask me more! what are your favourites?

you’ve got me so inspired!

have an amazing day/night :)

Avatar Costume Makeup

Hello lovelies!

So last night I did my first costume makeup look - as AVATAR! :)
This look needed a lot of preparation; I had to make my own prosthetics from scratch!
To do this I shaped some modelling clay into ears, and into a nose/forehead shape (I measured Dans head and nose - and then shaped the clay so it'd fit over his conk! :) ) As long as you keep the clay and your hands damp with cold water this bits pretty easy, and super fun! I made it easier to make the shapes by drawing outlines on paper first, which meant I could just pop them over the clay and cut the clay to get the right shape :) Make sure the nose part is super thick and wide - just like an Avatar! I left my clay for about two days to dry on a clingfilmed up tray..

Next, using a cheap paintbrush a applied a thin coat of liquid latex all over the clay casts. This stuff smells super strange! It takes about 15 minutes to be half dry (it goes from white liquid to clear liquid, so you'll know when it's dry), and I applied 4 layers, to make sure there wouldn't be any naughty holes in my prosthetics! You can see below the latex goes yellowy when it's thick enough to be taken from the clay cast.

For the next step I had to be extra careful, as if something goes wrong when peeling the latex back from the clay, it'll end up in a big sticky modge! :( To avoid this I liberally sweeped the top of the latex in Mehrons colorset powder. If you're doing this yourself, don't worry about getting that exact powder - any powder will do, loose powder, face powder, even pigments! You just need some small particles to attach themselves to the sticky latex, to make a barrier to prevent it from sticking to itself. As I peeled back the latex I sweeped the powder immediately onto the other side of the prosthetic too, don't forget this step!

Next up, you need to paint/decorate/embellish your prosthetics! For the avatar look I went for blue greasepaint, the blue in Kryolans Supracolour palette. It's important to note that the latex will only absorb/be decorated with cream makeup - eyeshadows and loose glitters or powders just won't stick! So to decorate prosthetics I used the blue face paint style makeup, and added some black bits, some pale blue bits and white bits too. I also used NYX glitter eyeliner sticks to add some fun little dots and lines. For the ears I also added a bit of pink face paint in too, and some veiny silvery and green glittery lines with the NYX pencils.

Next prepare the face for the prosthetics! I did this by applying the base blue colour all over Dans face - this meant there wouldn't be any awkward bits that weren't blue peeking out from under the prosthetics. Now to attach the prosthetics to Dans face! I used spirit gum, but for a quick photoshoot eyelash glue and kirby grips may work just as well. Pop the spirit gum either directly to the skin, or onto the prosthetic (you don't need hardly any!) and wait about 30 seconds till it becomes tacky, then stick your prosthetics on! (note - we don't need to stick the Avatar ears on with this - I'll explain how we work those later!). This is the most fiddly part - as the nose is such a terror to stick down perfectly! But be patient, and peel it off and start again if necessary, it'll work!

Now for the facepainting! I used this image as a general guide, but I didn't follow it completely at all - I made Dan into his own personal Avatar!

To get a glittery iridescent blue on some parts of the face I used NYX pigments in different shades of blue - they're brilliant! I can't recommend them enough, and they're really cheap! :)
For some darker lines I used the black shadow from Urban Decays Book of Shadows Volume 3, and blended. I used the white sparkly shade next to it ('Uzi') for highlighting and little white dots, and then the two blue shades on the bottom left for creating different lines and streaks. Again I also used the NYX glitter pencils for some more lines! :)

Next we popped Dans wig on and styled it a little - then for the ears! These need to be placed just above where Dans ears normally are, so to secure them I attached a pipecleaner to the back of them, which helped them hold their shape, and used masking tape to hold the pipecleaner in place. I then used kirby grips to attach the ears into the wig!

And voila - my lovely boyfriend as an Avatar!

Here's Dan before (looking a little surprised! haha :) )

And after!! :)

I LOVE these pictures! One day when we have children I know they'll laugh so much seeing their Pops dressed up as an Avatar!
Be creative and make yourself into an Avatar too!
Don't forget to send me the pics,

Illamasqua Job! - Fingers Crossed!

Hello sweeties,

So today I bit the bullet - I applied for a job at Illamasqua! I've always had such big self doubt in my mind that I'm not good enough, especially not good enough to be one of those amazing makeup counter girlies! But today I just thought, why not, why can't I be?! I love makeup so much, I love costume makeup, being individual, having crazy makeup - I love everything about it - so why shouldn't little old me work there too?!?
I wrote them a long email and tried to show them how much I love makeup and how passionate I am, and fingers crossed my personality and love will shine through :) It'd be such an honour to work for Illamasqua! So now my fate is in the hands of the Gods - let's hope I get my chance :) I can't think of anything more fun to do!
My fingers and toes will be crossed till I hear from them! Wish me luck!
Go after your dreams,

Emily xoxo

A Sneak Peek in my Portfolio

Hello my lovelies,

I thought I'd let you take a sneak peek inside my makeup artist portfolio. No stealing haha! I have so many ideas for other shoots, and have around 4 shoots in the coming months, as well as my costume makeup looks which I'll be doing on myself and Dan.. and I want to organise some other shoots too :) Enjoy peeking!

I love this photo so much, however I must admit I only did the base foundation - all the rest was done by SC Makeup Artistry based in Dundee - ie the lovely Sandra! And the model, Nina, wears this look perfectly - she was born to wear makeup like this!

Here's Helena - ready for a pin up style photoshoot!

This is Sadhbh in all her freezing cold glory in the middle of winter! Both the dresses below were designed by student designers - lovely!

Here's me doing my friend Jades makeup - not one for the portfolio - we were only off to the pub! :)

The next two is makeup on my friend Emily, the top was pin up themed, and the bottom just mermaidy / fairy / flowery fun! This was my first ever 'shoot' :)

Here's Rosie - in a Christmas makeup style shoot - isn't she gorgeous!

Here's Helena playing with the cutest dog ever that we met on set! It had a little jumper on!

Hope you enjoyed looking at these - I have more in the pipeline! And more from photographers that have never sent me the pics, or stuff that hasn't been published yet!

My Favourite Youtube Gurus!

Hey sweeties!

I thought I'd tell all you guys about my favourite Youtube gurus. I could literally waste days watching these (and often do). They're so fun and inspiring - I just love watching the transformations!
My favourite Youtube gurus specialise in 'costume'/'transformation' makeup, and I find them just SO amazing!

First up, is Promise Phan. She does such fun looks, and when she transforms herself, it's shocking just how much she looks like what she's aiming for! Her Kim Kardashian and Angelina Jolie tutorials are especially good! :)

Next up, you guessed it (!!!!!!), Kandee Johnson! I love her costume makeup looks - she's so inspiring! And when she dresses up, she always goes 100% of the way with costumes, accessories, wigs.. everything! She's brill!

Finally is iwanted2c1video aka Bethany. The makeup looks she creates are insanely amazing! She's so creative, and makes prosthetics and fun stuff for all the looks she does. I could sit and watch her videos forever!

Who are your favourite youtubers? Let me know - I love discovering new ones!

Flowers for me!

Hey buttercups!

So as you all know I've not been feeling too great these past few weeks - but my lovely family have bought and sent me these flowers - aren't they wonderful!
The blind's fell down on my front door so when I saw through the glass a man with a big bunch of flowers I was quite confused - then he said 'These are for Miss Hague' - I almost fainted!!
Aren't they lovely :D
I'm having such a brilliant day today, feeling on top of the world :)
Love you guys so much that read this - and I send each and every one of you a virtual flower and hug!

Emily xoxo

Mini MAC Haul

Hello lipsticks!

Today I got a super exciting delivery from the postman - a little black box, that only means one thing - MAC!!!! :D It's taken a week to get here but there's been snow and stuff - and it's only built my excitement and anticipation for it more! So here's what I got...

From left (kind of :P) .. Crinkle Powder in 'Chez Chez Lame', Complete Comfort Creme, Strobe Cream, Gloss Coat, Lip Gelee in 'Sintillation', Chromagraphic Pencil in 'NC15/NW20', Dazzleglass in 'Fantabulous' (the purpley top one), Dazzleglass in 'Extra Amps', Viva Glam Lipsitck in 'Gaga' and Cremesheen Lipstick in 'Speak Louder' (the bottom lipstick).

My favourite things just from initially looking at them are the lipgelee, lipglosses, the Viva Glam lipstick and the crinkle powder. The lipgelee is insanely beautiful - its a pearl shade with pink and white/cream glitters - I've honestly never seen a lipgloss or even a product as beautiful as this - it took my breath away. I'd really recommend this to anyone, just by what a gorgeous product it is. The other lipglosses are just obviously pretty - so glittery and pigmented and such lovely girly colours... aah MAC make the most beautiful things! I can't wait to use the crinkle powder - it has a goldish yellow colour with little sparkley gold bits in that'll look so beautiful as a highlight, I might have to invest in another pot of this before the collection ends! MAC's Champale collection has been my favourite collection by far in a while - the crinkle powders and lip gelees are just delicious!

Can you see how sparkly the lip gelee is up here! The camera just doesn't do it justice! And that Viva Glam lipstick - oh so pink! :)

I LOVE how sparkly and glittery the dazzleglasses are!
Here's a blurry pink glitter shot - just so girly!

I couldn't stop taking pictures of these beautiful products! They're just so beautiful - I found it so difficult to convey just how amazing they are using a camera, you have to see them to believe them!

Hope you've enjoyed peeking at my MAC goodies! Tell me more glittery things that you love!!!

Lip gloss kisses,

Emily xoxo
